Top 5 apps to transform your design process

Calling all website designers! It seems Smartphones have become an extension of our arms, and everywhere you look people seem to be stroking rectangles. Not exactly a fact to be proud of, but what can I say... I'm hooked too! Although, you can now make the most of the situation and use it to your own advantage. Stop wasting your time playing Candy Crush and start using these apps to boost your creativity and improve your designs.

1. Adobe Color CC

Adobe Kuler is now Adobe Color CC and it is part of the mobile apps you can find on the Creative Cloud. Yes, you will need either a free or paid Creative Cloud membership to use these apps, but they are worth it.

You can generate colour themes wherever inspiration strikes. Simply point the camera at something colourful and Adobe Color CC will instantly capture five points of colour in any scenery, creating a sample that you can then refine and save. Alternatively, you can extract colour from images in your own photo library, Flickr, or the web. This is exactly what we did to create the beautiful beach vibe for the Somersault website.

2. Over

Have you ever taken a photo and felt that a bit of text would enhance it? Say no more. Here is Over, the app which enables you to add typography to your images quickly and easy. The features of this app are amazing, but the best part (in their own words) is that "Over is fun. It allows you to express your creativity on the go. It’s that simple". This can be really useful to create social media posts, and push your online marketing.

Price: App Store £1.49  | Google play £0.99

3. Adobe ideas

This for me, is one of the best iPhone apps.

Don't worry if you have forgotten your pen and paper. With Adobe ideas you can create a virtual canvas with customisable brushes and pressure sensitive stylus support, you can draw freeform vector illustrations wherever you are. You don't need an Adobe Creative Cloud membership, but if you do have one, you can easily sync Adobe Ideas projects to Creative Cloud and open them for refinement in Illustrator.

4. Skala Preview

Are you a Digital designer? You will love this app.

Skala Preview sends pixel perfect image previews to any iOS or Android device, so you can preview your app or web designs immediately. Colours are identical to how the final app or website will look on the device. We used this app when designing The Idler Magazine and it made our life so much easier. If you’re using Photoshop CS5, CS6 or CC, Skala Preview can preview your canvas as you edit your file. You don't need to save, just lossless previews in real time. If you’re using other design softwares, Skala Preview can send images via files or the clipboard and update each time you save.

In my opinion this app is essential!

5. Adobe Shape CC

See a shape you like? You now can capture it with your iPhone camera and turn it into vectors. Shapes are saved to Creative Cloud Libraries so you can access them in Adobe Photoshop CC, Adobe Illustrator CC and more, thus you need either a free or paid Creative Cloud membership to be able to use this beauty.

Adobe Shape was developed for iPad 3 and iPhone 5 or newer models. It is not recommended for older models, although I've tested it on an iPhone 4s and works all right. We have used this for projects including Kevin Spacey and International Marketing Partners.
